The subject of consideration of this work are the techniques and methods used in reconstructing faces from skulls. Reconstruction of the face has a long history which is connected with funeral rites, teaching anatomy, Reconstructing the presonal appearance of famous people, and the identification of human remains. Facial reconstruction progress over the years is associated with the development of research on the relations between the structure of the skull bone and soft tissue thickness of the head. Currently, reconstruction of facial procedures, identification of corpses used as a last resort, because the cognitive reconstruction techniques is the subject of speculation. The basis of facial reconstruction because it is the skull bears the traces of muscles, and its dimensions are correlated with the characteristics of the face. Techniques used in facial reconstruction are selected depending on the destination. In this publication, facial reconstruction techniques are divided into: drawing, plastic and computer. Modifications which were subjected to the technique of plastic reconstruction of the face led to the creation methods (schools) facial reconstruction: Russian, American and Manchester. The controversy around the subject of facial reconstruction concern the subjectivity of the artist, who appears in the reconstruction of facial features, are not determined by the shape of the skull bones.

Przedmiotem rozważań niniejszej pracy są techniki i metody stosowane w rekonstrukcji twarzy na podstawie kości czaszki. Rekonstrukcja twarzy ma bardzo długą historię związaną z obrzędami pogrzebowymi, z odtwarzaniem twarzy znanych postaci oraz z identyfikacją ludzkich zwłok. Postęp rekonstrukcji twarzy na przestrzeni lat związany jest z rozwojem badań nad zależnościami pomiędzy strukturą kostną czaszki a grubością tkanek miękkich głowy. Obecnie rekonstrukcję twarzy w procedurach identyfikacyjnych zwłok stosuje się w ostateczności, ze względu na spekulacje co do jej wiarygodności. Podstawą rekonstrukcji twarzy jest czaszka ponieważ nosi na sobie ślady przyczepów mięśni, a jej wymiary skorelowane są z parametrami twarzy. Techniki stosowane w rekonstrukcji twarzy dobiera się w zależności od przeznaczenia. W pracy przedstawiony został podział na techniki rysunkowe, plastyczne i komputerowe. Modyfikacje jakim poddawano technikę plastyczną rekonstrukcji twarzy doprowadziły do powstania metod (szkół) rekonstrukcji twarzy: rosyjskiej, amerykańskiej i manchesterskiej. Kontrowersje wokół tematyki odtwarzania twarzy dotyczą subiektywizmu artysty, który pojawia się podczas rekonstrukcji cech twarzy, które nie są determinowane przez ukształtowanie kości czaszki.
